Small framed but large potential

Dexter cattle have been around since 1887 when the breed was first registered in Dublin, Ireland. These are thought to be a cross from the local Kerry cattle and perhaps the English, South Devon cattle in the early 1800’s by Mr Dexter, a land agent for Lord Hawarden.

Dexters made their way to the states in the early 1900’s, somewhere between 1905 and 1915.

Standing at 36”- 42” at the shoulder and weighing in at 600 - 700 lbs for cows, and 38” - 44” and up to 1000 lbs for bulls, they are compact and ideal for smallholders. This small frame also saves the land from compaction.

Milk or Beef?

Dexter were bred as a dual purpose breed but can be selectively bred to have a propensity toward a single purpose.

The milk is high in solids making it ideal for cheese and butter. We DNA test each cow to see which Beta Cassein protein she produces. Too scientific? A1 is the one that upsets stomachs, A2 is the easier to digest kind. Most milk available is the A1 kind.

The beef is of high quality and is on the relatively lean side. Ours is wonderfully flavored as our cattle are 100% grass fed as nature intended!
